DASH-Friendly Turkey Chili with Beans

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground turkey 93% lean or leaner
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 1 medium red bell pepper diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) low-sodium kidney beans rinsed and drained
  • 1 can (15 oz) low-sodium black beans rinsed and drained
  • 1 can (28 oz) diced tomatoes no salt added
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper; sauté for 4–5 minutes until softened.
  2. Add garlic and ground turkey. Cook until turkey is browned and cooked through, about 6–7 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon.
  3. Stir in chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Cook for 1 minute to toast the spices.
  4. Add kidney beans, black beans, diced tomatoes, and chicken broth. Stir to combine.
  5. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve warm, garnished with fresh cilantro or avocado if desired.
